TAMANG HERITAGE AND LANGTANG TREK

TAMANG HERITAGE AND LANGTANG TREK

TAMANG HERITAGE AND LANGTANG TREK

The nearest trekking destination towards the north of Kathmandu is Langtang National park. A trek towards the national park also takes you along Langtang and Gosaikunda. The Langtang region was Nepal’s first Himalayan National Park and was officially established in 1976.  It is the home to many protected species of wildlife and you may be lucky enough to spot the shy, endangered red panda amongst the lower reaches of the valley which is covered in dense forest.

Towards the west of the Langtang trek is the Tamang heritage trek. The region is predominately inhabited by the Tamang ethnic community, who are the oldest horse traders who had migrated between Nepal and ancient Tibet. Their customs and cultures are highly influenced by Tibetan culture.  The Tamang heritage trek delves into the different village of Rasuwa district. We can see houses built with wood crafted doors and windows and people decorated with beautiful ornaments and local dresses. Unfortunately, the devastating 2015 Nepal earthquake destroyed most of the traditionally built villages, and people have been using tin sheet roofs.

The trail passes through different elevation, where we might have to trek uphill and downhill and even through some landslide areas. The effort is all worth it for the experience of the authentic village life of the Tamangs, green lush forests, terrace fields, river treams with abundant Himalayan flora and fauna.
